Overwhelmed by festive stress? A premium quality bottle of CBD oil might be all you need to enjoy the season unmarred by all the usual things that get you down.
Whether it’s the pressure to be happy when you’re really not feeling it, the demands of gift buying, a surge in social interaction (or perhaps the opposite with impending restrictions looming!) or simply having the kids off school – The winter holidays are a time that many people sadly struggle with. While there’s a lot about them that has the potential to make you feel merry and bright, you’re most certainly not alone if, in reality, it can all be a bit much.
In many situations, there’s not much we are able to do to avoid the usual festive stressors. However, what we can do is support our mind and body with coping a little better, and taking top quality CBD products every day is one way to do just that.
A Dose of Bliss
Did you know that one of our endocannabinoids, Anandamide, is named after the Sanskrit word for ‘bliss’? There’s a very good reason for this and one that doesn’t go amiss when tensions are high.
Endocannabinoids are a very special type of neurotransmitter, synthesized and released on demand to activate one of our major physiological systems – the endocannabinoid system. Upon doing so, they relay information from outside of a cell into a cell to trigger the appropriate response that will keep all day-to-day bodily functions in balance. In fact, Anandamide activates the same receptors as THC, but instead of making you feel high, it just produces feelings of happiness.
As such, Anandamide is critical for many things, not least stress. In an ideal world, we would all have healthy levels of Anandamide circulating throughout our body and in our brain – where it acts as a gatekeeper for the stress response. Suitable Anandamide levels in the brain reduce the cascade of the fight or flight response to stressors. Enhanced Anandamide signaling also promotes active coping behavior, helping you find ways to cope with stressful events.
When Anandamide levels are depleted, which can occur as a result of chronic stress, sleep deprivation and lack of exercise (to name a few factors), there’s nothing to help stop your mind freaking out about what are, in the grand scheme of things, manageable issues. Being tight on cash as the gift-giving season approaches might feel stressful, but in most cases, this doesn’t mean your life is on the line – which is really what the fight or flight response should be reserved for.
When you take a regular dose of CBD oil (every day, ideally 3 times a day) you support your endocannabinoid system by inhibiting the enzyme that rapidly breaks down our endocannabinoids, resulting in higher levels of Anandamide that last longer. As a result, your stress levels are kept in check and ‘bliss’ is much easier to come by.
All you need is love
Although celebrations like Christmas are often taken over by consumerism, what lies at the heart of it all is love. That’s really what we all enjoy about these special days of the year – spending quality time with friends and family, and showing each other how much we care. However, social bonding might not come so naturally if your endocannabinoid levels are depleted, potentially resulting in social anxiety or exhaustion from even the briefest interactions.
This is now thought to come down to more than ‘just’ our endocannabinoids: Research indicates that Anandamide is intrinsically linked to the ‘love hormone’, Oxytocin, which is well-known for its role in promoting social contact. It’s also thought to encourage people to feel more extroverted, to such an extent that it is currently being investigated for the treatment of the social symptoms of Autism.
The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, revealed that blocking the effects of Anandamide (by blocking cannabinoid receptors) also ‘blocked the pro-social effects of Oxytocin’. Furthermore, the same study showed that ‘interrupting Anandamide degradation’ (which happens when you take CBD oil) enhanced the pleasure of social contact.
This is excellent news not only for those who struggle with social situations, but also for those being thrust into a holiday celebration with family members they might struggle to get on with! However, with the help of a little CBD, and a boost in both Oxytocin and Anandamide, you may find the day goes (perhaps surprisingly) smoothly.
With all of this in mind, why not treat your loved ones to the gift of CBD this holiday season? You can’t put a price on bliss! And we could all do with a little more love for one another after such a tough couple of years.
